Applications are invited for a Lecturer Edinburgh College of Art, University of Edinburgh. The successful applicant will be part of a team delivering seminars, workshops and lectures to Undergraduate and Postgraduate students within the Illustration Programme in the School of Design.

Teaching is during Autumn and Spring semesters and days will be confirmed following planning according to new hybrid delivery models. Other prep and admin times outside semester will also be required and can be flexible.

This is a part time (17.5 hours per week), fixed-term post for 12 months, commencing August 2020.
Salary is £16,898 to £20,161 per annum, pro-rata.

2. Job Purpose

We are looking for a dynamic, creative and effective teacher who has a relevant track record in Illustration studio teaching, and the ability to deliver reflective and critical projects. You should be able to demonstrate the ability to develop students’ high levels of illustration practice, and the intelligent exploration of issues in contemporary illustration, and how they impact and engage with culture and society.

3. Main Responsibilities

This maternity leave cover will mainly be working with years 3 and 4 and will support the team in developing and delivering courses with a large online component this year. All courses have specific content already developed but are flexible in bringing your professional interests to the teaching. The courses cover the fundamentals of illustration including idea generation, developing research methods, critical thinking and refining a personal illustration practice. The job will include introducing briefs and projects, some practical workshops (within new constraints), studio tuition, leading group tutorials, delivering lectures and assessment of both formative and summative work. Knowledge and experience in a range of illustration contexts is required and experience working within the fields of both illustration and graphic design is desirable.

We hope that we will attract applicants with a wide range of experience in the diverse practices of Illustration. Applicants will specialise and have a depth of knowledge in at least one field of illustration, and ideally have experience in others such as: comics, editorial, reportage, children’s books, advertising, concept art, infographics or exhibitions. Some knowledge of creative publishing is desired including bookbinding, printmaking, both contemporary and historical zine and artists’ book practice.

An ability to teach drawing is required and a good understanding for the teaching of other practices is desirable. These may include: painting, and digital tools including animation and 3d software.

Course content and assessment are completed through a virtual learning environment and there is a certain amount of admin in organising courses for a wide range of university students. In the current situation experience/confidence in online teaching will be important. We are looking for a candidate who has good organisation and planning skills as well as being an excellent communicator.

The successful candidates will be expected to develop a broad approach to historical, contextual and theoretical components of Illustration as well as support and contribute to the vibrant practice-based studio culture of Illustration at Edinburgh College of Art.

Core Duties and Responsibilities:

1 Teaching of Illustration to all four year-levels of the BA (Hons)
2 Teaching of Illustration to Masters students on the MA
3 Administration, assessment, presentation of work at examination period and periodic written feedback to students

4. Curriculum Design, Content and Organisation
The post-holder will:

  • Ensure that course content is relevant, current and consistent with the mission of the School and Programme.
  • Ensure that the delivery of courses is organised in such a way as to be appropriate to the resources available and to the learning styles and developmental stages of the students concerned.
  • Create and assist with the development of courses within the ECA and School of Design curriculum.

5. Learning Teaching and Assessment

The post-holder will:

  • Ensure that the learning, teaching and assessment methods employed on the courses delivered for the Programme are appropriate to the resources allocated, the demands of the subject, and the learning styles and developmental stages of the students.
  • Plan and manage the assessment of courses to comply with School of Design / ECA / University policy and to ensure students are given constructive and timely feedback that helps them improve.
  • Contribute to Assessments, Internal Moderations, Boards of Examiners and their pre-boards as appropriate.
  • Undertake such teaching duties as are appropriate to the requirements of the courses delivered and consistent with their area(s) of expertise.

6. Student Support and Guidance
The post holder will:

  • Ensure that students enrolled on the programme and courses are appropriately supported and provided with timely and constructive guidance for their academic development and pastoral care, fulfilling the policies and procedures of the School / ECA / University and utilising appropriate channels and media.
  • In liaison with the School Administrators, ensure that information provided to students enrolled on courses is current, accessible and consistent, including:
  • Course materials;
  • Course Handbooks;
  • Student timetables;
  • Project briefs;
  • Learning materials;
  • Feedback on assessment (formative and summative)
  • Contribute to information provided to students by the School and the Programme.
  • Ensure the maintenance of standards of student discipline and conduct.

7. Student Progression and Achievement

The successful candidate will:

  • Undertake course administration in association with the existing academic staff and in liaison with the School Administrators, ensure that student records are maintained which are current, accurate and constructive, including:

8. Knowledge, Skills and Experience Needed for the Job

  • Experience in a range of methods of teaching and delivery of course content.

    This role is grade UE07 and therefore the post holder is automatically included in membership of the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS), subject to the USS membership criteria, unless they indicate that they choose not to join the Scheme.

    The role is grade UE07 insert grade and attracts an annual salary of £16,898 to £ 20,161 for 17.5 hours, part time, each week. Salary is paid monthly by direct transfer to your Bank or Building Society account, normally on the 28th of the month. Salaries for part-time staff are calculated on the full-time scales, pro-rata to the Standard Working Week.
